Do Video Games Cause Violence?
Some of the points I’ll be covering are:
- are video games good or bad?
- Why do people play video games?
- Do video games influence real-world violence?
What are video games?
A video game is another form of entertainment, you get movies, sports, etc.
But what’s unique and special about video games is it displays pixels on your TV screen and you can moves these pixels.
Like your character or car and it tells a visual story that you can interact with.
It gives you feedback through sound and vibrations by way of the controller and this can give that sense of realism like a gun.
Video games are extremely popular, I’m sure all of us here have played at least one. (I know I have, a bit too many)
And over time video games have had their fair share of criticism and the main criticism is “video games cause violence”
I’m going discuss both sides of the table.
Do video games actually cause real world violence?
Research for and against video games
“Players were tested in a variety of ways over a variety of time periods, short term to the longer term and researchers concluded that violent video games have an effect on aggression.
The research demonstrates a consistent relation between violent video game use and increases in aggressive behavior, aggressive cognition and aggressive affect, and decreases in pro-social behavior, empathy and sensitivity to aggression,” the report concludes.”
However, pro-gaming groups have denounced the findings, saying that the psychologists who carried out the research are known as “anti-gamers” and were selective in the studies that they deemed relevant.”
These pro-gaming groups set up their own surveys and polls, and these polls heavily indicated towards video games not causing real life violence.
Yes, they can cause violent thoughts but so can movies and books, the action is what counts.
Playing violent video games increases aggressive thoughts and angry feelings, yes but again, the action is what counts.
…games actually prevents violence because you’re channelling those negatives into something else.
The bad day you had is channeled into a video game. So in a way video games are doing society a favor and is considered a stress relief to many people such as billionaire Elon Musk.
How do we restrict and stop children being desensitised? How do we get the games to their intended audience?
This is very simple, you can use the parent control level which is available on every modern console like the PS4 and PS Vita.
If you’re not on a console and on PC you can download an application for parent control features.
Looking at the back of a video game box includes age restriction, the box could say it contains sex, drugs, violence etc.
And this is an industry standard, it’s the same with blue rays and DVDs. Parents can easily access the information and decide whether they want their child to play it or not.
A game like Shadow Of Mordor is violent but it tells you that when you read its description.
Do video games cause people to become introverts?
If you’re worried your child will be gaming all the time you can put “game time lock feature” on and this enables you to tweak play times.
Also what’s wrong with being introverted? And in a way you are more extrovert than anything because of online gaming. You can talk to people on the other side of the planet.
Distance you from the community?
That all depends on what you’re doing and how long you spend in your room. You can balance them both. But video exposes you to new communities and you can grow a liking to it.
Video games can generate violent thoughts depending on what you’re playing but does’t necessarily lead to real life violence.
I’ve personally been playing video games for as long as I can remember and I don’t have a violent background.
Even with no parent restrictions and violent games at a young age, I’m fine.
