Today we’ll only be going over the very best of the sad anime out there. The top of the cream type of stuff.
But I will warn you…
…if some of these anime leaves you feeling empty and even a little disturbed, that’s your own fault.
Let’s get straight into this…
Akame Ga Kill
Akame Ga Kill has to be the anime that’s left people feeling empty more than any other show.
This incredible show focuses on a young boy named Tatsumi. You see, Tatsumi comes from a poor village and he needs to earn money for his people.
So what does he do? He goes into the capital of the empire to see if he can use his sword skills to earn gold.
On his journey to the capital, Tatsumi has this image of the capital being this beautiful, prosperous, and fruitful place.
Unfortunately, he gets a major dose of shock when he finds out it’s nothing like he imagined.
The capital is filled with people in authority who completely abuse their power. This is due to the emperor being a child.
He’s easily manipulated by officials and has no idea what’s going on in his empire. He just sits in his palace and thinks that his people are happy,
And this is where an organization of assassins recruit Tatsumi. He’s transformed from this local village boy to a ruthless killing machine.
Akame Ga Kill is the anime which will feel you feeling empty like no other.

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is much more than an anime. It touches on so many subjects like the reality of war, racism, betrayal, and the value of life.
You follow the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse. Their universe revolves around alchemy, the law of equivalent exchange.
For example, if they’ve got a few pounds of metal, they could touch it and that metal would transform into a sword.
The two brothers tragically lost their mother when they were just children. So what did they do?
They tried to bring her back with alchemy, the law of equivalent exchange.
What is the value of human life? At first, the Elric brothers, believe the value of human life is its material worth.
The material worth of a human:
Comprised of Water (35 L), Carbon (20 kg), Ammonia (4 L), Lime (1.5 kg), Phosphorous (800 g), Salt (250 g), Saltpeter (100 g), Sulfur (80 g), Fluorine (7.5 g), Iron (5 g), Silicon (3 g) and fifteen traces of other elements.
The brothers bring together the material and try to resurrect their mother. Unfortunately, they end up failing, in the process, Edward loses some of his limbs and Alphonse loses his entire body.
The show revolves around the brother’s journey in trying to find the philosopher’s stone. In hopes it will bring back their body.

Attack on Titan
If you’ve been in the anime scene for any length of time, you’ve heard of Attack on Titan. If not, shame on you.
But seriously…
…Attack on Titan is one Hell of an emotional rollercoaster.
The first season was incredible. Unfortunately, season 2 got some backlash (us here at TA loved season 2)
And then season 3 took the series to new heights. It’s the season which turned many haters into hardcore fans.
Attack on Titan is set in a post apocalyptic world where the remaining humans are forced to live within a few cities, surrounded by humungous walls.
These walls protect them from giant humanoid eating monsters called titans. The titans only have a taste for humans and no other living creature.
What’s strange is titans don’t get any nutritional value from eating humans. They eat them and throw them up later. Just like a cat’s furball.
You follow the main character Eren as well as his 2 closest companions, Mikasa and Armin.
Their lives were changed forever one day when a giant titan appeared who was bigger than the walls and smashed it to pieces.
Letting in hoards of titans. One of the titans gets a hold of Eren’s mother and devours her. All whilst Eren is watching helplessly.
Eren then vows to get rid of the titans for good. His dream is to one day go to the sea and explore the world.
Eren, Mikasa, and Armin decide to join the army. Which to many is basically a death sentence.
As it’s very difficult to fight a titan. The only way to kill a titan is to slice deeply at the back of its neck.
Otherwise, they’d just regenerate.
But how do you get up to the necks of these monstrosities?
This is where the manoeuvre gear comes into place. The manoeuvre gear allows people to get from place to place in a rapid manner.
It helps them fight the titans and go toe to toe with them, no matter their size. Once you get up to a titan’s neck, you can slash it with some dual-wielded swords.
There are all sorts of creative ways to use this weapon.
I will warn you…
…in this show, you’re going to see people get stabbed in the back constantly. It’s extremely difficult to trust anyone.

Berserk
Berserk is by far the darkest show I’ve ever watched.
Never in my entire life have we ever seen a charactered betrayed in the most brutal manner.
In this show, you follow a character named Guts. He’s a vicious fighter and will do absolutely anything to win a fight.
He’d even put your sword in his mouth to stop you from swinging.
Whenever you see Guts, you know something crazy is about to happen.
This show is set in medieval Europe and inspired by their dark fantasy.
This show isn’t for the weak-hearted. By the time this show finishes, you will say to yourself, “What the F*CK did I just watch”.
Guts is the type of guy who doesn’t like to show a lot of emotion. He’s been through a lot of stuff.
“He was born from a corpse, then found by a woman named “Shisu“. She picked Guts up and begged her mercenary husband named “Gambino” to let her take Guts in.
When Guts reached the age of 3 Shisu died a horrible death. A disease-infested her body.
Whiles Shisu was dying a gruelling death. Guts watched it all happen, powerless Guts could only watch. The only mother-like figure Guts had was gone at only age 3.
Gambino decided to take him under his wing and trained Guts under the sword mercilessly.
Guts later enlisted in the mercenary group at age 9.
Donovan, part of the same mercenary group claims that he bought Guts for a night to satisfy his depraved pleasures, Guts tried to fight back but was powerless against Donvan. Guts was then defiled and humiliated that night.” Read more about Guts
Berserk is one of those few anime where the main character feels like a real person. When he’s in trouble he can’t just scream from the top of his lungs and power up.
When he’s in trouble, you know nobody is going to save him. He has to get himself out.
Please view this show if you are mature enough.
NOTE: I’m only talking about the 1997 Berserk show, not the 2016 and 2017 anime. They don’t do this series the justice it deserves. I would also highly recommend you read the manga.

Most Emtional Anime Award Goes To: Code Geass
Code Geass is one of those few anime that you can truly call a masterpiece.
You could never give this anime enough praise.
In this show, you follow a school student named Lelouch. Oh, and…
…he’s also the prince of the most powerful and ruthless empire of all time.
Lelouch’s father, the emperor, abandoned him and his crippled sister after their mother was assassinated.
Lelouch is a genius chess player. He has a real talent for the game and as a result, he’s brilliant at combat strategy.
He uses this talent to his advantage by commanding a small army of mechs to fight the empire of Britannia.
Personally, I’m not a huge fan of mecha but Code Gess is an exception. The mechs in this show are stunning and powerful.
To be honest… you almost get attached to these mechs as you see them go from average to the cutting edge of mechs.
If you think being a genius at combat and commanding a few mechs, you’ll be pleased to know Lelouch has a Geass.
Geass is a power that gives its user a special power.
Lelouch’s Geass is being able to command people to do whatever he’s like.
I remember watching this show and being in awe of the mech fights and admiring Lelocuh’s genius.
By the end of the show, my jaw was on the floor and I was almost in tears.
I remember when one very special person died and I stopped watching the show for a couple of weeks because it had a major impact on me.
Who knew a person could be hit in the feels this hard. Still, till this day I have personally never watched an anime that comes close to this show. Not even Death Note.
Conclusion
So those were the most emotional anime.
This list is, of course, subjective. These are the anime that hit me in the feels as well as many others.
