What is Exploding Kittens?

Exploding Kittens is a card game that was created by Matthew Inman and Elan Lee.

It’s a 2-5 player card game but if you combine another Exploding Kittens deck, either the same one or an expansion…

…the game becomes suitable for 9 players.

With the original Exploding Kittens deck, there are 56 cards.

How to play:

There’s a draw pile and a discard pile.

At first, all the cards are in the draw pile and each time you play a card it goes in the discard pile.

The deck has to be face down and you all take turns drawing a card.

When someone draws an Exploding Kitten…

…they’re dead and out of the game.

This process continues until there’s one player left in the game.

In short…

…If you explode, you lose.
If you don’t explode, you win.
And all the other cards are used to avoid exploding

Also, the way you end your turn is by drawing a card.

So make sure to play any action cards before drawing a card.

(You don’t have to play any action cards on your turn and can just draw)

All the cards and what they do:

Exploding Kittens

When you draw an Exploding Kitten, you die and you’re out of the game.

You must immediately reveal it to everyone when you draw an exploding kitten.

Defuse

A defuse card allows you to negate the Exploding Kitten.

For example, if you draw an Exploding Kitten, you can use a defuse card to avoid blowing up.

You then place the Exploding Kitten back into the deck, wherever you’d like.

Attack cards

End your turn without drawing a card and force the next player to take 2 extra turns.

So the victim of this card has to draw 2 cards and then draw another card to end their turn.

If the victim of this card also plays an Attack card, then their turn is immediately over and the next player has to draw the 2 extra cards.

See The Future

When you play See The Future, this is going to allow you to see the top 3 cards.

You can go ahead and look at the top 3 cards but can’t change them.

Also, there’s no need to reveal the top 3 cards to any players.

After you’ve taken a look, put them back in the same order.

Shuffle

Playing this card will allow you to shuffle the draw pile.

Remember, you’re only allowed to shuffle the cards and not allowed to look at any of the cards.

Nope

Stop any action except an Exploding Kitten or Defuse card.

For example, if someone plays See The Future, you can Nope that card so they won’t be able to use it.

They will also have to put that card into the Discard pile even though they weren’t able to use it.

You can also play a Nope on a Nope card to negate the effects.

You can play a Nope card even if it’s not your turn.

Skip

End your turn without drawing a card.

You can play Skip as a defence against an Attack card but it only ends 1 of the turns you will have to play.

You can then play another Skip card to end the other turn.

Favor

Force any player to give you one card of their choice.

Cards with no instructions

These cards are powerless on their own.

HOWEVER…

If you combine them into pairs, this will allow you to steal a card from another player.

You get to pick which card you steal.

Exploding Kittens is one of the most fun card games I’ve ever play and keep in mind, I’ve played a lot of them.

Its fun, quirky nature makes it such a joy to play.

Its light-hearted humour of kittens, lasers, explosions and sometimes goats…

…makes it the perfect party game.

It literally only takes 2 minutes to learn how to play this game and that’s even mentioned on the box.

There’s no steep learning curve and it still has surprisingly deep playing mechanics.

You can just play one game of this and pretty much understand everything that’s necessary.

Games last up to 15 minutes so you won’t be getting bored and you’ll always be on your toes figuring out what to do next.

Just looking at the artwork of every single card makes you want to laugh out loud.

It’s just hilarious to look at and brings a smile out every time you play.

What I really love about this game is it’s not just a stupid game.

It’s not something that dulls your mind and actually rewards skilled and patient players.

A good poker face can really help you win. Too bad my poker face sucks, I give everything away all the time.

There are a few problems with this game.

First of all, it’s only 5 players, so if you have a bigger social group you’re going to have to get another deck to upgrade it to 9 players.

After some time, the cards can get warned down.

The cards can get scratched and scuffed. When this happens, you’ll sometimes be able to identify a card because of the marks on it.

Making the game unfair.

So you’ll definitely want to get some card sleeves.

This is no fault of the quality of the cards.

In fact, they’re high-quality and feel nice to hold in the hand.

Cards getting scuffed just happens over time and it’s unavoidable.

That’s why you should invest in some trading card sleeves.
